The sound of heavy metal and mangled buildings coming from the corner of Lakeland and 63rd Avenues in Brooklyn Park is like nails on a chalkboard for Don Grubish.
"I wish them well," he said, then adds with a laugh, "Do it fast."
Grubish is manager of CC Military Surplus that sits just south of the demolition on Lakeland, alongside County Road 81. The shop sells military surplus items, as well as air soft guns, paintball guns and accessories.
"We're worried that during construction people might think that they can't get to us, which they can," said Grubish.
It'll just be a lot trickier.
Starting this month, Hennepin County will rebuild northbound County Road 81 and Lakeland Avenue, the east frontage road in front of Grubish's store. Next year, crews will focus on southbound 81.
Crews will not only add a lane of traffic to 81 in each way, but they will also restructure the layout of the frontage road and add trees and shrubs to the corridor. County engineers don't know yet when they will shift northbound 81 traffic to the southbound lanes. When it does happen, traffic will go down to one lane in each direction.
"It will be worth it in the end to see nice beautification of the corridor and a little bit better capacity for motorists in the northwest area here," said Hennepin County project supervisor Paul Backer.
"I guess in the long run that'll benefit us," said Grubish. "But right now, you know, you always gotta go through hell before you get to heaven."
Grubish said low sales could force him to cut his employees' hours, but he hopes online sales at ccmilitary.com and more marketing will keep that from happening.
"We're going to minimize that to the best of our ability and advertise more if we have to, more radio ads, maybe bring back the TV commercial or whatever and make sure that people know that we're still on the map and we're not going away," said Grubish.
